This directory contains a
DAML+OIL (March 2001)
representation of the
CIA Chiefs of State
data.
Example
Here is information about Afghanistan in
HTML,
DAML,
and
HyperDAML
formats.
Approach
We processed the
HTML country pages
using:
Notable features include:
- properties are added to existing
FIPS country instances
rather than creating new objects
- information for each country is put on a separate page,
to minimize retrieval time and parallel the HTML representation
- we use
Person
class
and associated properties from the
Friend-of-a-Friend (foaf)
ontology,
to facilitate interoperability with other applications
A list of the resulting pages is available
here.
Possible Future Directions
- regenerate the DAML on demand or according to a regular schedule
- generate persistent IDs for People and Offices,
by tracking tenure in office
- use the "last update time" and/or the generation time
to timestamp statements
- link equivalent offices across countries
(e.g. Head of State, Head of Government, Defense Minister, etc.)
- try to get access to the original database from which the HTML pages were presumably generated
Related Work
We have similarly
provided the
CIA World Fact Book in DAML.
