Subject: Announcing the Semantic Web Applications for National Security
    (SWANS) Conference

    All,

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Information
Exploitation Office (IXO) and the Federal Chief Information Officer
(CIO) Council's Semantic Interoperability Community of Practice (SICoP)
    are
sponsoring a Semantic Web Applications for National Security (SWANS)
Conference to be held April 7-8, 2005 in the Washington, DC metropolitan
area. The purpose of the meeting is to raise awareness and enhance the
ability of Military and Government technology decision-makers to
    capitalize
on the emergence of the Semantic Web. One of the key objectives of this
meeting is to foster additional pilot and implementation projects using
    OWL
    and RDF technologies.

The first day's agenda includes a description of the current status of
Semantic Web technology progress by DARPA, W3C, and key Government
technology leadership. We will have a powerful group of technical and
operationally oriented speakers and tutorial leaders. We have an
    impressive
set of keynote speakers: Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World
    Wide
Web and Director of the World-Wide-Web Consortium; Mr.
John Gilligan, USAF Chief Information Officer; Mr. Steve Cooper,
    Department
of Homeland Security Chief Information Officer; and Mr. Gary Winkler,
Principal Director, Enterprise Integration, US Army CIO.
Additionally, there will be a wide range of demonstrations by
    researchers
and key Government and academic early adopters to illustrate the power
    of
using Semantic Web technologies in pilot programs to address National
Security needs. A substantial portion of the first day will be devoted
    to
what the National Security community user might find useful to start a
    pilot
    project.

The second day will have two major activities: (1) a set of tutorials
    for
those wanting to gain more detailed information on Semantic Web
technologies; and (2) a Trade Show to allow vendors who are employing
Semantic Web technologies to demonstrate their capabilities to this
    select
audience. Also during the Trade Show, Semantic Web experts will be
conducting pilot program advice sessions to discuss technical and
programmatic aspects of developing pilot projects utilizing RDF and OWL
    technologies.
