October 9, 2001 Attendees: Mike Harold Richard Dan Frank Ian Deb Peter Sandro Dan C. Announcements: Agenda: minutes from October 2 - approved any updates on submission or WebOnt No news ... if it is released as a note or whatnot it will be sent to the committee report on EU/NSF meeting (Ian, Frank, Deb, et al) Frank: A workshop where the idea was to brief officials from EU / NSF on where the research should be focused Frank: The slide I sent around, result on working group on language and inference. (other areas: infrastructure, knowledge acquisition and modeling, and ontology management). Main points of concern ... General people are concerned about the multiplicity of languages related to the Semantic web. Too much talk about languages and not enough about modeling styles. Different reasoning services, work to be done in identifying them and deciding whats hard and easy. (Did I miss one?) Identity ... semantics of you or I, global unique ID's, etc. Frank: All these were seen as areas that would be fruitful for research. Last one seems most urgent .... Frank: workshop identified the multiplicity of languages as the most urgent. Mike: NSF looking into starting an activity in this area? Frank: The Lady from NSF was trying ... Stefan: without a set of tools that are openly and freely available, this might not happen. (was having trouble understanding for some reason, missed a good chunk of conversation here) Model Theory (Peter, Pat) datatypes and RDF Schema (Peter) semantics in daml+oil.daml (Peter) extra-query information (Richard) Peter: in DAML+OIL(3/01) a literal, the meaning of that is defined as any one of the things that could have that as their value ... then its up to interpretation. In RDFS there is a single mapping between that and whatever it is. Should WebOnt become XMLOnt? ... Because of meetings goin on next week, we will have a short telecon to touch bases, talk about semantics, talk about WebOnt...
