DAML Joint Committee Telecon Notes: November 28, 2000 Attendees: Mike Dean Stephan Jeff H. Ian Deb Frank John Flynn Lynn Stein *Jim Hendler *Tim Berners-Lee *Dan Connolly *Dieter Fensel *Dan Brickley *Pat Hayes *Ora - regrets ** Frank was there from the beginning last time but had his mute button on! Agenda: (x)Report on the Semantic Web Technologies Workshop in Luxembourg (Ian, et al) (x)Technical discussion: selected items from Dan Connolly's DAML-ONT todo list (x)Technical discussion: DAML-M ontology mapping constructs (x)Questions to help shape the agenda for the 2-day meeting in DC... DAML-Rules initial discussion (Subgroup to meet following regular meeting) Deb: Is there anything in particular that XML people think should be viewed at the XML conference - either in the exhibit hall or on Wednesday at the conference. Deb: Any comments on Richard's and My updated semantics posting (that does not require holds or sequence variables) at: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-rdf-logic/2000Nov/0124.html -- Luxembourg meeting update: An introductory session to bring people together who might be interested in new projects in a new action line 2001. Hans (?) talked about how the new action line will be in a word about the semantic web -- all about making sense of data. Tim B-L's road map was mentioned as a starting point. There should be four elements to the way forward .. formalizing, grounding, acting, and interacting. Talked about sustainability, standards, scalability, platforms, etc. Point was to make contact among groups across Europe of interested group. All the participants gave 15 minutes presentations that told what they were researching and were interested in. reference: road map from Tim Berners-Lee. Document in the notes section called Semantic Web Road Map on the W3C website. It predates the project we are involved in. (url is in the mail to Mike D) time of funding? (april) size of funding? (from other sources - 20 million euro) american / euro collaboration? (OIL and DAML were both mentioned. In introduction they said they wanted to see a wide venture including people working in the states.) Specifically said a combination of research and prototype projects. They want some forward looking projects tackling the hard problems we all know are there, which are still in the research stage. Commercial and not military. -- put off Dan's todo list until the face to face meeting tomorrow. -- set of ontology mapping constructs mapping between different ontologies. DAML-M is the name that has come out in talking between Mike D and Deb has anyone (SHOE or OIL) worked on this? SHOE: You are going to rename elements, then everything else is done using the OIL rules. Uses Horn(?) clauses. You have to have two rules ... since they only go in one direction, but you can have an actual equality of two things between two ontologies. Cannot map between units of measures, for example. In SHOE it is not really a class (?) OIL: Very similar to SHOE. Data reconciliation (dollars and pounds) can't really be done, but you can do a lot of other things. Equality axioms would be used to make equalities. Can handle both bi- or uni-directional relations. Database Schema integration uses this technique. They have a tool that can integrate it, then use the reasoner to check it all. -- Agenda for meeting: Look at different types of ontolgies and their differences (as they did with database schemas) and how we would de al with them. (URL from Jeff on its way to Mike D) Schedule time at the beginning of the meeting to discuss current systems. Some initial background to clear up misconceptions and what things were debated at the time of language design, and limitations, etc. (OIL, SHOE, and RDF/RDFS) New language definition that is a presentation syntax for DAML to communicate between people (in emails, white boards, scribbled on papers). No pointy brackets ... :) Editor for OIL oblique (??) DAML. Has the look and feel of protege but can deal with the full range of axioms and export the full range of syntaxes (OIL, DAML, RDF). Will be announced on the list before and demonstrated at the meeting. Ontology editor only for now! OIL Ad (?) Freely available. Downloadable! Being packaged right now! DAML Viewer will posted to the rdf logic page. And will be mailed out as a link to everyone SHOE tools are open source and available from their website! Can be used for making other / new tools ... to get ideas or reusing code. They have a knowledge annotator. They have a tool that takes SHOE and converts it to DAML. Language Versioning!! We need to figure this out! Tool demos.... Translate XMI to DAML-O. Another Tool. announce this to the world because then they will get excited!! After the meeting to get the versioning stuff under control. DAML site- Tools page: Non daml page. Resources page: For people building tools, is the language doing well? One answer: yes so far! Create / Fill in a FAQ. OIL article that was basically a faq will be mailed to Mike D. What half day should Jim be there? Thursday afternoon or Friday Morning. Who's coming: Mike Dean Dan Connolly Frank Jeff Jim Ian Ora Deb Tim = ? Dan B = ? Stephan = no Dieter = no Lynn = no -- DAML rules
